Were Ancient Egyptians Black? The Scientific Way to Answer This

Were ancient Egyptians Black? Ancient DNA, ultraviolet radiation, pigmentation genetics and 3,000 years of Egyptian history now allow us to answer that question scientifically, period by period.

Ask “were ancient Egyptians Black?” online and something predictable happens. One side says yes. Another says no. Within minutes, somebody produces a tomb painting, somebody else produces a mummy, and somebody announces that modern racial categories did not exist in antiquity—as though ancient Egyptians therefore had no skin colour at all.

There is a better way to answer the question.

Ancient Egypt lasted for roughly 3,000 years. Its population was not frozen in 3000 BCE and photocopied for the next thirty centuries. Egypt experienced continuity, migration, trade, conquest, intermarriage and regional differences. The Delta faced the Mediterranean and Near East. Upper Egypt stretched south towards Nubia and Kush. Different periods therefore require different levels of certainty.

But there is another piece of evidence that rarely enters the argument: the sun.

Human pigmentation evolved partly in response to ultraviolet radiation. Egypt lies roughly between 24° and 31° north, beneath much stronger UV radiation than northern and much of central Europe. Skin pigmentation therefore cannot be treated as an arbitrary aesthetic characteristic. Its evolution has a biological history.

The evidence in one paragraph

The short answer: the evidence presently supports predominantly dark pigmentation through much of early ancient Egyptian history, including a directly sequenced Old Kingdom Egyptian whose predicted skin pigmentation ranged from dark to black. Later periods become increasingly complicated, particularly in northern Egypt, as migration and contact increased. “Ancient Egyptians” therefore cannot scientifically be reduced to one complexion across every dynasty and every region.

The interesting question is no longer simply “Were ancient Egyptians Black?” It is: when, where, and what does the evidence actually allow us to say?

Before Egypt, start with the sun

Were Ancient Egyptians Black? Start With the UV Evidence

One of the most useful pieces of evidence about ancient Egyptian pigmentation does not come from Egypt.

It comes from ancient Eurasia.

A 2025 PNAS study by Perretti and colleagues analysed pigmentation-associated genetic information from 348 ancient individuals across Europe and West Asia, spanning approximately 45,000 years.

The finding that matters most here is not simply that many prehistoric Europeans were darker than modern stereotypes suggest.

It is how slowly lighter pigmentation spread.

Even that Iron Age figure was a pooled result. As late as the Iron Age, some parts of Europe displayed only approximately 9–10% white-skin predictions, and individual well-sampled countries frequently remained below the pooled figure.

Now place Egypt back on the map.

Europe—particularly northern Europe—experienced comparatively weak ultraviolet radiation and therefore substantially stronger evolutionary pressure favouring depigmentation.

Egypt did not.

Egypt lies roughly between 24°N and 31°N, much closer to the equator and under considerably stronger UV radiation than Britain, Scandinavia or much of continental Europe.

The population-genetics logic: if lighter pigmentation was still spreading slowly through populations living in environments where natural selection had considerably more reason to favour it, we should be extremely cautious about imagining that much stronger-UV Egypt had somehow become extensively pale thousands of years earlier.

This does not substitute European genomes for Egyptian genomes. Nor does it prove the complexion of an Egyptian individual for whom no DNA survives.

It does something different.

It establishes an evolutionary baseline against which claims about ancient Egyptian pigmentation must make biological sense.

The scientific method used on this page: where direct Egyptian genomes exist, use them. Where they do not, combine population continuity, migration evidence and what is known about pigmentation evolution under different UV environments. Do not turn inference into measurement—but do not pretend biology tells us nothing either.

Were Ancient Egyptians Black in Predynastic Egypt?

For Predynastic Egypt, no genome-wide pigmentation study presently gives us a representative Nile Valley population sample.

That limitation matters.

But absence of a sequenced pigmentation dataset does not leave every possible complexion equally probable.

Predynastic Egypt existed thousands of years before lighter-pigmentation variants became common even among populations living much farther north under substantially weaker sunlight.

There is therefore no obvious evolutionary mechanism by which Predynastic Nile Valley farmers should have possessed pigmentation dramatically lighter than their deep ancestors while populations in lower-UV Europe remained overwhelmingly dark.

Best-supported answer: Predynastic Egyptians were predominantly dark-skinned.

For anyone asking were ancient Egyptians Black during the Predynastic period, the conclusion is necessarily inferential rather than directly measured.

But it is about as strong an inference as population genetics can offer in the absence of representative Egyptian genomes.

Science is strongest when it knows the difference between very likely and measured.

Were Ancient Egyptians Black in the Old Kingdom? Then a Genome Arrived

Here the evidence changes category.

We no longer have only evolutionary inference.

We have an Egyptian genome.

In July 2025, Nature published the first whole genome recovered from an individual associated with Old Kingdom Egypt.

The man was buried at Nuwayrat and radiocarbon dated to approximately 2855–2570 BCE, bridging the Early Dynastic period and the Fourth Dynasty.

Researchers used the forensically validated HIrisPlex-S system to estimate aspects of his phenotype.

The supplied prediction assigns approximately 38% probability to the darkest category and approximately 57% to the next-darkest, leaving only a sliver of probability for intermediate or pale pigmentation.

For the question were ancient Egyptians Black, that matters enormously because this is direct genetic evidence rather than an artistic interpretation.

For years, arguments about ancient Egyptian appearance could disappear into debates about paintings, sculptures, mummy preservation, artistic convention and modern racial terminology.

This individual provides something qualitatively different:

DNA → pigmentation-associated variants → probabilistic phenotype prediction.

The limitation: this is one man, not a census. The researchers also caution that phenotype-prediction systems carry additional uncertainty when applied outside the populations on which they were primarily developed and validated.

One individual cannot establish the complexion of every Egyptian, every province or every dynasty.

Yet caution is not the same thing as pretending the result does not exist.

Direct evidence: an Old Kingdom Egyptian from Nuwayrat was genetically predicted to possess dark-to-black skin, brown eyes and brown-to-black hair.

Remarkably, the result lands almost exactly where the UV-based evolutionary inference had already predicted before the genome was available.

What Prehistoric Poland Tells Us About Ancient Egyptian Pigmentation

Now travel roughly 2,500 kilometres north.

Not because prehistoric Polish people were Egyptians—they obviously were not—but because chronology provides a powerful reality check.

A Late Neolithic mass grave at Koszyce, Poland, radiocarbon dated to approximately 2880–2776 BCE, yielded genomic data from 15 individuals associated with the Globular Amphora Culture.

Notice the date.

These people lived at almost exactly the same time that Egypt was consolidating its early dynastic state.

Phenotypically, the research evidence in the source material places them within an intermediate-to-dark pigmentation spectrum, with brown eyes and dark to dark-blond hair.

Crucially, they did not yet possess the combination of depigmentation variants that would justify simply imagining them as modern pale northern Europeans.

Central Europe in approximately 2800 BCE had not yet become the pale-skinned region familiar today.

Now travel south again.

Egypt sat thousands of kilometres closer to the equator and beneath substantially stronger UV radiation.

Yet some popular reconstructions effectively ask us to imagine Egypt as lighter than contemporary European populations that had themselves not yet substantially depigmented.

That requires an explanation.

Simply assuming it is not one.

A deliberately provocative modern analogy: the Koszyce individuals should not simply be called “white” in the modern American racial sense. Put crudely, their pigmentation would make attempts to project Jim Crow-era racial categories backwards onto them deeply uncomfortable. The analogy is rhetorical rather than a scientific classification.

Or, put less delicately: ancient Central Europeans were still relatively dark while pyramid-age Egyptians are routinely reconstructed as though someone had already invented Scandinavian winters, factor-50 sunscreen and several thousand years of future evolution.

What Koszyce proves—and does not prove: it does not establish Egyptian pigmentation by itself. It establishes an important chronological comparison showing just how late substantial depigmentation remained incomplete much farther north.

Were Ancient Egyptians Black During the Middle Kingdom?

For the First Intermediate Period and Middle Kingdom, the evidential dial moves back from direct phenotype prediction to inference.

There is presently no published genome-wide pigmentation dataset covering these centuries at sufficient scale to give us a direct population answer.

Nor, within the evidence assembled here, is there an identified demographic event sufficiently large to justify assuming that pigmentation-associated allele frequencies suddenly transformed after the Old Kingdom.

That matters because populations do not change complexion because historians change chapter headings.

The end of a dynasty is not a biological reset button.

Without evidence of population replacement on the scale required to shift pigmentation frequencies substantially, the responsible starting assumption is continuity with the earlier Nile Valley population.

But the wording matters.

We should not take the Nuwayrat individual and stretch him across another five centuries as though he personally represents the Middle Kingdom.

So when asking were ancient Egyptians Black during the Middle Kingdom, the scientific answer remains an inference from continuity rather than a directly measured population-wide phenotype.

Best-supported inference: predominantly dark pigmentation probably remained common through the First Intermediate Period and Middle Kingdom, but we do not yet possess direct genome-wide pigmentation measurements sufficient to quantify it.

That is less dramatic than pretending certainty.

It is also better science.

Were Ancient Egyptians Black During the Hyksos Period?

This is the point at which a single answer for the whole of Egypt starts needing a serious asterisk.

During the Second Intermediate Period, populations with documented Near Eastern origins and connections were present in northern Egypt, and the Hyksos ultimately ruled from Avaris, modern Tell el-Dab’a, in the eastern Nile Delta.

Archaeological evidence for this Near Eastern presence is substantial.

But it is concentrated in a particular region.

Avaris is not Aswan.

The Delta is not Upper Egypt.

An immigrant population in the north cannot simply be multiplied down the Nile until it becomes the entire Egyptian population.

Nor do we currently possess a sequenced pigmentation genome from this specific context that converts Near Eastern ancestry into an exact skin-colour prediction.

What the evidence establishes: “Egypt” was never required to be pigmentation-uniform. Different regions experienced different degrees of external contact at different times, and the far north was consistently among the areas most exposed to it.

Nehesy: When “Foreign Influence” Runs in Two Directions

Nehesy fits this complicated Delta world remarkably well.

He ruled from Avaris during the Second Intermediate Period, decades before the Hyksos formally took control of the city.

His evidence belongs to a different category from the Nuwayrat genome.

This is not genetic phenotype prediction.

It is textual, onomastic and genealogical evidence.

His name, nHsy, is the standard ancient Egyptian term associated with a Nubian.

Egyptologist Kim Ryholt’s reconstruction—drawing on fragmentary stelae, scarabs and an obelisk inscription dedicated to Nehesy’s mother—proposes that he was the son of a Canaanite-connected father and a Nubian queen named Tati.

If that reconstruction is correct, something fascinating was happening precisely when northern Egypt was becoming increasingly connected with the Levant.

The same royal family associated with those northern connections was simultaneously commemorating Nubian royal ancestry prominently enough for the king’s mother to appear in monumental inscription.

Greater external contact therefore did not operate like a one-way conveyor belt carrying lighter Near Eastern populations southwards. The Delta was experiencing a two-way current: connections ran towards Canaan, while connections also ran south towards Nubia and Kush.

Prince Ipqu provides a thinner supporting thread.

His existence rests substantially on scarab evidence and inferred birth order within Ryholt’s reconstruction, so his place in the argument should be held more cautiously than Nehesy’s own attestation, which spans multiple independently discovered stelae.

Evidence boundary: Nehesy’s evidence tells us how Delta elites identified and commemorated ancestry. It does not give us a sequenced pigmentation phenotype for Nehesy himself.

Together, however, the evidence sharpens the picture rather than weakening it.

The regional variation of the Second Intermediate Period was not simply a one-directional drift towards Near Eastern influence “diluting” an otherwise African population.

Nubian royal blood could reach the Delta throne at the same time that Canaanite connections were reshaping northern Egypt.

That is a more accurate—and frankly more interesting—history than either “always identical” or “increasingly foreign”.

New Kingdom • c. 1550–1070 BCE

Were Ancient Egyptians Black in the New Kingdom?

By the New Kingdom, Egypt was an imperial power operating across a much wider geographical world.

And here we have two separate genetic clues that do not point in exactly the same direction.

That disagreement is useful.

It is what real population history looks like.

By this period, the question were ancient Egyptians Black no longer produces one equally strong answer for every region, because the surviving evidence itself begins to show greater variation.

Ramesses III: An African-Associated Paternal Signal

Ramesses III ruled approximately 1186–1155 BCE.

A 2012 BMJ investigation examining the so-called harem conspiracy studied genetic markers from Ramesses III and another mummy.

Using a statistical haplotype-prediction approach rather than a modern high-coverage whole-genome sequence, the analysis was interpreted as placing Ramesses III within Y-chromosome haplogroup E1b1a, a paternal lineage strongly represented today in West and Central Africa.

That finding is intriguing.

It also requires careful wording.

What Y-DNA can and cannot tell us: a Y-chromosome result describes one paternal lineage. It does not provide an individual’s complete ancestry and it does not directly measure skin pigmentation. The Ramesses III result also came from limited genetic markers and statistical haplogroup prediction rather than modern high-coverage whole-genome sequencing.

So Ramesses III should not be transformed into something the study did not measure.

But neither should the reported African-associated paternal signal simply disappear because it complicates a preferred reconstruction.

Abusir el-Meleq: A Different Egyptian Signal

The landmark 2017 study by Schuenemann and colleagues analysed ancient Egyptian mummies from Abusir el-Meleq, a site with longstanding connections to the eastern Mediterranean and Near East.

Only three complete genomes were recovered in that study.

One individual dated to the late New Kingdom was subsequently reanalysed by forensic company Parabon NanoLabs.

Parabon’s proprietary phenotype pipeline predicted a “light brown” complexion and reported a derived, light-associated variant at SLC24A5, one of the genes associated with lighter pigmentation.

Important distinction: this phenotype analysis was produced by a private forensic company and presented separately. It was not a phenotype conclusion of the original 2017 peer-reviewed publication.

The archaeological location matters too.

Abusir el-Meleq belongs to the northern half of the Egyptian world and had longstanding exposure to eastern Mediterranean and Near Eastern populations.

These results do not have to cancel one another.

Why should they?

Egypt was hundreds of kilometres long.

Thebes was not the Delta.

A royal paternal lineage was not a provincial population.

One mummy was not a census.

The New Kingdom lesson: a Theban royal lineage and a northern Egyptian individual can display different genetic signals without either study being meaningless. That is precisely what we should expect from a large kingdom containing real regional and individual variation.

The easiest way to create a misleading argument about ancient Egypt is to place every type of evidence in the same bucket.

A sequenced genome is not the same thing as an inscription. An inscription is not the same thing as an evolutionary inference. A proprietary forensic reconstruction is not identical to a peer-reviewed phenotype analysis.

What the whole timeline supports

So Were Ancient Egyptians Black? What the Evidence Supports

Stack the periods together and a clear pattern emerges—with important complications later in the timeline.

From the Predynastic through much of the Middle Kingdom, every line of evidence assembled here—direct genomic data where it exists and UV-selection plus continuity reasoning where it does not—points towards predominantly dark pigmentation.

The directly sequenced Old Kingdom individual reinforces that conclusion rather than contradicting it.

The Second Intermediate Period and New Kingdom are where the picture becomes legitimately more complicated.

That is not because the underlying biology suddenly stops applying.

It is because increased migration and regional contact, especially in northern Egypt, introduce real variation.

Final verdict: if the question is were ancient Egyptians Black—particularly in the Predynastic, Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom periods—the present evidence supports predominantly dark pigmentation, with many individuals likely dark enough to be visually described as Black today. If the claim is that every Egyptian across every dynasty, region and century possessed exactly the same pigmentation, the evidence does not support it.

Those questions are related.

They are not identical.

“Black” itself is a modern social and racial category. Ancient Egyptians did not organise their identities according to twenty-first-century British or American census classifications.

That observation should clarify the question—not be used to evade it.

An ancient population can lack our racial vocabulary while still possessing skin pigmentation.

Likewise, dark pigmentation does not automatically establish recent sub-Saharan ancestry. Populations in different parts of the world evolved or retained dark skin under strong UV environments.

The scientifically defensible answer is therefore neither “every ancient Egyptian was Black” nor “ancient Egyptians were not Black.” Both flatten three thousand years into a photograph.

Science has not made ancient Egypt racially simple.

It has made simplistic reconstructions increasingly difficult to defend.

It does not provide a representative sequenced pigmentation dataset allowing us simply to label the Hyksos “white.” Modern racial categories are poor substitutes for actual phenotype evidence.

Was Nehesy Nubian?

His name, nHsy, is associated with the Egyptian designation for a Nubian. Kim Ryholt’s reconstruction further proposes that Nehesy had a Canaanite-connected father and Nubian queen mother, Tati. This is textual and genealogical reconstruction, however, not genomic phenotype evidence.

Was Ramesses III Black?

The 2012 BMJ investigation produced genetic-marker evidence statistically interpreted as E1b1a for his paternal lineage. That lineage is strongly represented today in West and Central Africa. However, the analysis was not a modern high-coverage whole genome and did not directly predict Ramesses III’s skin pigmentation. Saying that the study directly proved his complexion would therefore go beyond its evidence.

A later private forensic analysis by Parabon NanoLabs predicted a late-New-Kingdom individual as light brown and identified a derived light-associated SLC24A5 variant. Because that phenotype analysis was not part of the original peer-reviewed publication, it should be treated separately and cautiously.

Were ancient Egyptians sub-Saharan Africans?

“Sub-Saharan African” is a broad modern geographical category and is not interchangeable with dark skin. Ancient Egypt was an African Nile Valley civilisation connected over millennia with populations to its south, west, north and east. Pigmentation, ancestry, geography and cultural identity should be analysed separately rather than collapsed into one label.

Why do reconstructions of ancient Egyptians look so different?

Reconstructions depend on the evidence and assumptions used: skeletal morphology, artistic convention, mummy preservation, genetics, forensic phenotype systems and, sometimes, the modern illustrator’s expectations. Ancient DNA increasingly allows some of those assumptions to be tested rather than merely repeated.

Did ancient Egyptians think of themselves as Black?

Ancient Egyptians did not use modern Western racial classifications. That does not answer the biological pigmentation question. Their cultural self-identification and their physical appearance are different historical questions and require different evidence.
