When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis claimed that Black people benefited from slavery by learning skills like blacksmithing, major news outlets reported his words without historical scrutiny. That headline is an example of bad journalism.

A United States governor’s comments are reported without any historical criticism of their inaccuracy. The public is not told that his statements are unfounded, contradicted by peer-reviewed archaeological evidence, and rooted in an outdated, Eurocentric narrative of technological history. When journalism simply repeats political claims without interrogating them, it abandons its duty to inform and instead becomes a megaphone for misinformation.

Iron is the most important metal in human civilisation. More than 90 percent of all refined metal on Earth is iron, and its transformation into steel underpins modern engineering, from bridges and railways to architectural achievements like Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium. Any claim about the origins of ironworking must therefore be treated with seriousness, precision, and respect for global evidence. Yet popular summaries routinely erase Africa’s role, presenting a distorted timeline that centres the Middle East and Europe while ignoring the earliest proven iron smelting on Earth.

When political leaders or encyclopedias claim that ironworking spread from the Middle East or dates back to the Hittites around 2000 BC, they are repeating a narrative that ignores peer-reviewed archaeological evidence.

The truth is groundbreaking. The earliest evidence of true iron smelting, not just meteoritic iron, comes from sites in West and Central Africa, dating back to 2300 BCE. This predates Middle Eastern iron smelting by centuries.

There is no substantial evidence of iron smelting in the Middle East prior to 1000 BC. That is according to Erb-Satullo in the Journal of Archaeological Research, 2019.

The persistence of the Middle East first narrative is a textbook example of how misinformation spreads. It highlights incompetent journalism that fails to ask the most basic questions. Do I have complete information? Is the evidence I am repeating objective?

Popular summaries and even Wikipedia entries have historically framed the narrative around diffusion from the Middle East. To avoid misinformation in media, always check the source of a historical claim. Is it a politician, a peer-reviewed paper, or a clickbait article? Look for concrete evidence like slag and furnaces rather than vague terms. Be skeptical of carbon dating claims that are not backed by solid stratigraphy. Support publications that invest in fact-checking and analysis, not just rewriting press releases.
