Largest Companies in Africa: 351 – 400

In a recent survey by McKinsey Africa undertaken in 2018, they discovered 438 businesses with $1 billion of annual sales. Of this total 25% are subsidiary group companies of foreign domicile multinationals, 50% have a local origin, 40% are publicly listed, and 60% are privately owned. In this list we only provide a sample of the largest companies in Africa, with the sample ranked by size. There are other large companies based in Africa which are not listed here.

351. Rhodes Food Group Holdings

Bruce Henderson established the Rhodes Food Group Holdings in 1999 and it is currently listed in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The company’s headquarters is in Western Cape, South Africa. SEMAFO Burkina Faso is a subsidiary of SEMAFO (a Canadian-based gold producer with over twenty years’ experience building and operating mines in West Africa). 353. Cervejas de Mocambique

Cervejas de Moçambique produces, markets and distributes alcoholic beverages in the Republic of Mozambique. It offers lager and opaque beers. The company was incorporated in 1995 and is based in Maputo, the capital of the Republic of Mozambique. Cervejas de Moçambique is a subsidiary of AB InBev Africa BV. AB InBev is the world’s largest brewer of alcoholic drinks with annual sales of $54.6 billion (2018 estimate). The annual turnover of Cervejas de Mocambique is US$ 297million (2018 estimate).

354. Societe Nationale de Siderurgie

This company manufactures mechanical parts, steel, and iron products as well as providing maintenance and research services. It was established in 1983 and its headquarters is situated in Casablanca, Morocco. It exports to South Africa, Tunisia and Nigeria. The company’s products are machine cables, wire rods, and steel bars. The company’s annual revenue is US$295million (2018 estimate). It is owned by ArcelorMittal and the King of Morocco (through Société Nationale d’Investissement, SNI). The company has major mining sites in Nadar and Jorf Darfur. The company’s subsidiaries include Acinder Industria Argentina de Aceros S.A, ArcelorMittal Annaba Spa and Mitta Steel Liberia Limited. Its shareholder ArcelorMittal is the largest steel production privately owned company in the world, with $76.0 billion of yearly sales (2018 estimate).

The company was founded in 1988 and is based in Kempton Park, South Africa. The annual revenue is US$5.3billion (2018 estimate).

The company was incorporated in 1968 as a private company and has its head office located in Casablanca, Morocco. Societe Marocaine de Carburants manufactures petroleum products. It stores, transports and distributes petroleum products as well as other hydrocarbons, lubricants, and gas. The company’s subsidiaries include Maghreb Petroleum Exploration S.A and L’Office Nationale des Hydrocarbures et des Mines. The company has a yearly turnover of MAD500million (2018 estimate) and currently has 294 employees on its payroll.

As of March 2019, it had $40.7 billion in client assets under management. Although the company is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, in South Africa, it is also present in Namibia. Jumia is an online shopping company with business interests in groceries, fashion, computing, and electronics. The Jumia Nigeria headquarters is in Lagos, Nigeria. The ultimate parent company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). It has a labour force of 4,000 employees (2018 estimate). The consolidated annual turnover is US$150million (2018 estimate) and Jumia has a presence in 14 African countries (some of which include Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Ghana, and Tunisia). It made an initial public offering on the NYSE in April 2019 and as of May 2019 had a market capitalization of $1 billion.

359. MTN Benin

MTN Benin was established in 2006. MTN Benin offers its customers a range of products and services in the field of mobile communications. Currently, MTN Benin has more than 4.2 million active subscribers in Benin and has more than 43% of the market share. This makes MTN the number one mobile service provider in Benin. MTN Benin’s distribution network is made up of more than 61,000 distributors and sales outlets across the country. MTN Benin currently employs 293 people. The annual turnover of MTN Benin is US$ 291million (2018 estimate).

360. Alexander Forbes

Alexander Forbes was formerly known as Alexander Forbes Equity Holdings Proprietary Limited before it changed its name to Alexander Forbes Group Holdings Limited in 2014. The company’s headquarters is located in Sandton, South Africa. Ascendis Health has four divisions: Ascendis Medical, a provider of private hospitals and dispending doctors; Ascendis Pharma, involved in drug manufacture; a Consumer Brands division, involved in manufacturing products for the Skin & Body, Sports Nutrition and Wellness markets; and the Animal Health division. This is a business with diverse business lines situated in Angola and Namibia. It is 52% owned by Bidvest Group although it was co-established in 1989 with the Namibian Government. The company is listed on the Namibian Stock Exchange. The company’s operations cover food distribution (of mackerel, oysters, fishmeal, canned pilchards, fish oil, and Omena), freight and logistics, motor retail, products and services. The company’s headquarters is situated in Windhoek, Namibia and it exports its products to South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Botswana. The annual turnover of Bidvest Namibia is US$282 million (2018 estimate). It currently has 2,500 employees on its payroll.

It manufactures 36 million garments annually, including 15m fine knitwear garments and 16.5m woven garments, from 19 production units (7 in Mauritius, 6 in Madagascar, five in India and one in Bangladesh). The company currently has more than 20,000 employees on its payroll. The company’s headquarters is situated in Ebene, Mauritius and is listed on the Mauritius Stock Exchange.

368. Mauritius Telecom

Mauritius Telecom is a telecommunications company based in Port Louis, Mauritius. It was incorporated in 1992 by the collaboration between the former Overseas Telecommunication Services Limited and the Mauritius Service Limited.The company offers mobile, TV, Internet, Fibre-to-the-Home, content and data services. The company has 1.3 million subscribers and had 2,338 employees on its payroll in 2017. The company’s subsidiaries are MT Properties Limited, Teleservices (Mauritius) Limited and Telecom Plus Limited. Mauritius Telecom’s annual turnover was MUR 10 billion (equivalent to US$290 million) at the end of the 2018 financial year.

369. Orascom Telecom Media & Technologies

Orascom Telecom Media & Technologies was incorporated in 2011 and its headquarters is located in Cairo, Egypt. The company provides GSM, media and technology, and cable business mainly in Egypt although their services extend to other countries like Pakistan, North Korea (officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), Lebanon, and other parts of Africa. Currently, the company recently diversified its operations to include entertainment, agri-industry, transport and logistics, energy, real estate, and telecom infrastructure. It has 29 employees and an annual turnover of US$112 million (2018 published results).

370. Airtel Uganda

Airtel Uganda was previously known as Celtel Uganda before it changed its name. It was incorporated in 1995 and is the first telecommunication company in Uganda. Its headquarters is located in Kampala, Uganda. Airtel Uganda is the 2nd largest mobile network provider in Uganda, with a 44% share of the 22 million mobile phone users of Uganda (2016 estimate). It operates as a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel Limited. Airtel Uganda provides affordable mobile communication services in Uganda. Its services range from the mobile top up, international roaming, pre and postpaid plans, and data services. Airtel Uganda also provides ringtones, hello tunes, and money transfer services. The annual turnover of Airtel Uganda is US$278 million (2018 estimate).

371. Alf Sahel

Alf Sahel was incorporated in 1999 and it has its headquarters located in Casablanca, Morocco. Alf Sahel is a local company in Morocco which currently has no penetration outside Morocco’s market in terms of subsidiaries, although they export some of their products to the neighboring countries. This company produces and markets animal feeds. It has 500 employees and an annual turnover of US$278 million (2018 estimate).

372. CONOIL

Mike Adenuga founded the Conoil company in 1984 although it had been operating since 1927 under the name Consolidated Oil Nigeria Limited. The company markets refined petroleum products and also manufactures and distributes chemicals and lubricants within Nigeria for both industrial and domestic purposes. It also supplies White petroleum products such as aviation turbine kerosene, grease oil, and motor spirit. It extends its services to production of gas cylinders, gas valves. The annual turnover of Conoil is NGN115billion (2017 estimate). The Conoil head office is located in Lagos, Nigeria and it has 177 employees.

373. MARIDIVE & OIL SERVICES

Mardive and Oil Services was incorporated by Capt. Issa Eleish, Mr. Magdy Zeid and Mr. Maged Nadim in 1978 as a Free Zone Joint Stock company in Port Said. Its headquarters is located in Alexandria, Egypt and is the largest company in Egypt providing offshore marine and oil services. Maridive & Oil Services with the help of its subsidiaries offers a wide range of services from gas to oil exploration. It also has production companies which function in areas of construction, maintenance, supply and transport of materials. 374. UAC of Nigeria

UAC of Nigeria traces its roots to the Royal Niger Company (RNC) which received its Royal Charter from the British Government between 1672 and 1750 and has been operating under different names until 1973. The United African Company was founded in 1879 to merge four companies carrying out the operations of the RNC: Alexander Miller Brother & Company, Central African Trading Company Limited; James Pinnock and West African Company Limited. In 1881 the National African Company was floated to raise funds to acquire all the assets of the United Afgrican Company. 1900 it was called the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. After being merged with the Northern Nigeria Protectorate which was loss-making it became the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. Currently, UAC of Nigeria is one of the most enduring and recognizable companies in Nigeria due to its diversity in operations from food and beverages, logistics, paint to real estate investments. Some of its subsidiaries include popular brands such as Mr. Biggs, Supreme Ice cream, Grand Groundnut Oil. 375. Total Petroleum of Ghana

Total Petroleum of Ghana was formerly known as Mobil Oil of Ghana. It was incorporated in 1981. It is a subsidiary of the global Total Group. Total Petroleum of Ghana offers the distribution of oil products mainly for aviation, mining operations, building, and transport sector. Its main products are diesel, lubricants, gasoline, and bitumen. It also produces insecticides and some car care products. Total Petroleum of Ghana has 864 employees and an annual turnover of US$273million (2018 estimate).

376. Maurel & Prom Gabon

Maurel & Prom Gabon specializes in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. It was founded in 1831 as an operating of shipping lines between West Africa and France. The company is based in Libreville, Gabon. Maurel& Prom Gabon operates as a subsidiary of Etablissements. It has 538 employees and an annual turnover of €355million (2018 estimate). The Group generates most of its business in Africa through the exploitation of onshore assets already developed (Gabon and Tanzania) and a significant stake (21.37%) in Seplat, a leader of indigenous operators in Nigeria.Maurel& Prom Gabon has its head office located in Gabon.

Delta Holding is a company with five business segments. CFAO Motors Côte d’Ivoire started business operations in 1973 and it is the exclusive Ivoirian distributor for a set of globally renowned brands: Citroën, Peugeot, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Suzuki, JCB and Bridgestone. CFAO Motors Côte d’Ivoire also distributes the entire range of Bridgestone tires. CFAO Motors Côte d’Ivoire serves most of the country from its branches in Abidjan and dealership at San Pedro, providing customers with a responsive and reliable service. It has an annual turnover of US$268million (2018 estimate).

381. Amni International Petroleum Development Company

Amni International Petroleum Development Company Limited is an independent indigenous oil and gas exploration and production company in Nigeria. It owns platforms, pipelines, and offshore terminal infrastructure in Nigeria and Ghana. The company was incorporated in 1993 and its head office is located in Lagos, Nigeria. 382. Entreprise Nationale de Grands Travaux Pétroliers (ENGTP)

Entreprise Nationale de Grands Travaux Pétroliers (ENGTP) is a subsidiary of the Algerian oil company, Sonatrach. It specializes in the field of design and construction of industrial facilities for production, processing, transport, and distribution of hydrocarbons. The company was founded in 1980. Airtel DRC is a mobile telecommunication company operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The company began operations in 2000 as a GSM mobile services provider. Airtel DRC is a subsidiary of Airtel Africa, a holding company for Indian telecommunications giant Bharti Airtel. Airtel Africa operates in Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The company was formerly known as Paterson Zochonis Industries Plc before it changed its name to PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc in September 2006. Chirano Gold Mine is owned by the Toronto-based Kinross Gold Corporation which has a 90% stake in the company and the Ghanaian government with a 10% state in the company. Chirano began production in 2005. Kinross Gold acquired the mine in 2010 through a US$7.1 billion takeover of Red Back Mining. It has a workforce of approximately 400 people with an annual turnover of US$258million (2018 estimate). Its headquarters is located in Ghana.

Jubilee insurance company was established in 1937 in Mombasa Kenya as the first incorporated insurance company. In 1968 it moved its headquarters to Nairobi. Jubilee Holdings is a certified investment company. A good number of its subsidiaries focus on long term insurance with a few subsidiaries like Tsavo power investing in other fields like the energy sector. In 2018, it had approximately 1,428 employees and a turnover of US$257million.

New Mauritius Hotelwas founded in 1952, and it is headquartered in Curepipe, Mauritius. New Mauritius Hotel is one of the most famous and the oldest Hotel group in Mauritius. With the support of its subsidiaries, it operates in different segments namely: tour operations, hotel operations, property development, and Airline and Inland Catering. It has its subsidiaries in other African countries like South Africa, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Morocco. It also operates outside Africa in countries like Italy, France and the UK. It had approximately 5,000 employees with a turnover of US$256million in 2018.

395. Times Media Group

Steve Strickbine founded the Times Media Group in 1997. Currently, it has several subsidiaries that carry out its operations. Times Media Groupis a digital and print media company operating in the Phoenix and Tucson metro markets. It serves both South Africans and the international community. Its headquarters is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. It sells over 1.1 million copies of its print media (newspapers and magazines) and provides a service to millions of online readers every month. Times Media Group has 3,200 employees and an annual turnover of US$255million (2018 estimate).

396. Seplat Petroleum Development Company

Seplat Petroleum Development Company is an oil and gas company. It explores, develops, and produces oil and gas in Nigeria. It operates a portfolio of assets in the Niger Delta region, including a 45% interest in the OML 4 that covers an area of 267 square kilometers; a 45% interest in OML 38 that covers an area of 2,094 square kilometers; and a 45% interest in OML 41 that covers an area of 291 square kilometers. Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc was founded in 2009 and is based in Lagos, Nigeria. The company currently has a labour force of 408 workers. Its turnover is US$254million (2018 estimate).

397. Office National Des Telecommunications

Office National Des Telecommunications commonly known as ONATEL SA was founded in February 1987. Its headquarters is located in Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso – the capital of the Mossi kingdoms (11th Century to 19th Century). It is a leading mobile telecommunications services provider within Burkina Faso. It offers a wide range of products and services like provision of data and internet services, mobile money transfer services and a dialer network. It is a subsidiary of Itissalat Al-Maghrib. It has over 1,200 employees and recorded a turnover of US$ 253million at the end of the 2018 financial year.

398. Soc. d’ Exploitation de Ports- Marsa Maroc

Soc. d’ Exploitation de Ports- Marsa Maroc was incorporated in 2006. Its headquarters is located in Casablanca, Morocco. This Moroccan-based company provides marine port services. Its services include cargo handling, storage facilities, logistics and a wide range of ship services. It operates in several ports within Morocco. It has approximately 4,500 employees, who help in the daily operation of the company. It recorded a turnover of US$ 252million at the end of the 2018 financial year.

399. Ciments de l’Atlas

Ciments de l’Atlas was founded in 2007. Its headquarters is located in Sidi Maarouf, Casablanca, Morocco. This company has two cement plants, namely: Ben Ahmed plant and Beni Mellal plant. All these plants have a capacity of producing 1.6 million tonnes of cement from each plant every year. The company manufactures and distributes cement, clinker, granulate, and concrete ready for use. Some of its subsidiaries offer air cargo services. It has approximately 400 employees and a turnover of US$ 252million (2018 estimate).

400. Zambia Sugar

Zambia Sugar Plc operates as an agricultural and sugar manufacturing company in Zambia. The company operates through Cane Growing and Sugar Production segments. It produces raw and refined sugar under the Whitespoon brand name to local consumer markets and industrial customers; and specialty sugars and syrups. The company also sells molasses: to farmers to be used as an animal feed supplement; an ingredient in the manufacture of yeast; a dust suppressant on gravel/dirt roads; and fertilizers, as well as for sugar cane fields. It also exports its products. The company is headquartered in Mazabuka, Zambia. Zambia Sugar Plc is a subsidiary of Illovo Group Holdings Limited. It has 2,002 permanent employees and 5,093 seasonal employees who help during peak sessions. It had a turnover of US$250million in 2018.
